Restylane is a unique form of non-animal, stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a polymerized sugar molecule embedded around collagen fibers in our skin. Since we have the identical molecule in our own skin allergic reactions are much less frequent than bovine collagen i.e. 1 in 2000 versus 3%. Restylane is made in Sweden. It was FDA approved in the United States on 2003.
How does Restylane?
During treatment, the crystal-clear RESTYLANE gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. When enhancing lips or facial contours, RESTYLANE adds volume and shape to the treated area.
Where on my face can Restylane be used as a filler?
Restylane gel is best used under the skin for structural augmentation.
When will I notice the effects of the treatment and how long will they last?
The fullness achieved shortly after the placement will subside by 15%-30% within the next few days. The remainder will persist for many months depending on the location. After the first treatment, one or more additional injections (at least one week apart) of Restylane may be necessary to achieve the desired level of correction / fullness.
What can I expect after my treatment?
After placement slight redness and swelling is expected for the following few hours. Side effects could include swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and very small chance of infection. Although rare, red or swollen bumps may occur. Similar to any other “filler material” there is a very small chance of major blood vessel occlusion.
Who should not use Restylane?
You should not use Restylane if you have allergies to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria.
