Restylane for Under Eye Depression and Dark Circles

What causes the depression and dark circles under the eyes?

Similar to other medical conditions of the human body the sunken area under the eyes is a multifactorial condition.  An individual’s anatomy and build is one factor.  Aging, drop of the cheek mass, and fluctuation in weight are other factors.   Chronic rubbing and irritant chemicals can render the area darker.  The lack of fullness over the bony frame of the eye results in the relative depression.  Just like a frame points out an entity, the so called depressed dark circles can make one look tired and a lot older than the individual actually is.

How to mitigate the dark circles and depression under eyes?

Restoring the fullness seems to be the most direct and rational route.  A filling material composed of naturally occurring chemicals in the human body would be ideal.  It would be great if the filler induced one’s own skin-fullness to be semipermanent.  It would be fantastic if the filler was easily and safely dissolvable.  The minimally invasive procedure of injecting Restylane in a sculpting manner has all the desired properties to plump the hollow area under the eye so that the contour of the face looks fuller and younger.

How long does the Restylane under the eyes last?

There is no definitive answer for this question.  The longevity of the Restylane placed in the depressed rims around the eyes depends primarily on how many times the filler has been pinjected at the site.  Since there is very minimal muscular movement in the area, the time between Restylane injections ranges from six to 12 months for the first round. Over time, less of the filler is needed to produce noticeable results and each time it is injected, it lasts longer.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is a unique form of non-animal, stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a polymerized sugar molecule embedded around collagen fibers in our skin. Since we have the identical molecule in our own skin allergic reactions are much less frequent than bovine collagen.  As a result of further purification of Restylane, allergic reactions are almost unheard of as of late.  Restylane is made in Sweden. It was FDA approved in the United States on 2003.

How does Restylane work?

During treatment, the crystal-clear RESTYLANE gel is placed, through sculpting technique, into the skin in very small amount amounts with a very fine needle. The placed gel restores volume.

What can I expect after my treatment?

After placement slight redness and swelling is expected for the following few hours.  The most common side effect is bruising, which can be minimized by avoiding aspirin, Advil, Motrin, and the like prior to effect is bruising, which can be minimized by avoiding aspirin, Advil, Motrin, and the like prior to to any other “filler material” there is a very small chance of major blood vessel occlusion.
